Welcome to Mindset + Metabolism
Nuanced conversations about health for women in their 30s and 40s
Do Step aerobics and SlimFast ring a bell? If you’re like the women I see in my private consulting practice, you may have been trying to lose weight for decades, maybe even since you were a little girl watching your mom struggle with her weight. And if you’re reading this you’ve probably tried to lose weight too.
Maybe some of the diets you’ve tried “worked”… until they didn’t. They may have resulted in weight loss, but left you feeling defeated or discouraged because it wasn’t sustainable. Maybe they were based on BS science and left you feeling more confused than ever. (Is fruit good or is it “basically candy”?!)
I hate that for you. I also get it. I’ve been there too.
What if I told you that weight loss could be fun? That the journey could help you learn about yourself and become your own best friend. That you can still enjoy foods you love without guilt or without second guessing yourself.
You’d probably ask what I was selling — what my motive is.
This is my platform to share information with you, without strings. I’m not selling you a diet. I’m not asking you to buy plastic measuring cups and bring them with you everywhere. I’m not funded by the 150 billion-dollar diet industry.
I genuinely want to help. I’ve wanted to help for a while, but have felt torn on HOW to best share this message with you.
I’m finally speaking up.
It’s become out of hand… with all of the BS on social media and people feeling desperate for solutions, seeking quick fixes that aren’t supporting optimal health, becoming more overweight/obese, and surging rates of mental health issues, I am done biting my tongue.
I’ve been in the health and fitness industry for over a decade and have a decent-sized Instagram following. I’ve worked with hundreds of women in my nutrition private practice. I currently host a top podcast with nearly 2 million downloads, and lead 4,000+ women’s health practitioners for Needed (a perinatal nutrition company), but I don’t really use my voice.
Huh?
Sure, I talk to a lot of people, but the spotlight is mostly on them. I interview experts. I listen A LOT. I am from the Midwest, so I have that “midwest nice” attitude and desire to avoid conflict at all costs. When I disagree with someone in the health and wellness space, I hold my breath, smile and nod.
I am done with that.
Why a Newsletter?
Social media is a cesspool of crappy information, often shared by people who don’t understand the nuance. They THINK they know what they’re talking about, but make broad generalizations and are overly confident in their understanding of human behavior.
The click-baity nature of IG and TikTok leads people to solutions that seem promising but are missing the mark in terms of mental and physical health. That influencer you love with a six-pack sharing how she eats doughnuts every day and intuitively eats isn’t telling you the full story.
I HEAR the full story when she finally realizes what she’s doing isn’t working for her. I work with people like her weekly in my private practice — there’s a lot she’s giving up in terms of a social life, vitality, and sleep to look like that. The dinner with her friends leaves her anxious the entire week. Her energy comes from caffeinated drinks, it’s not generated by her body because she’s incredibly depleted. Her sex drive is nowhere to be found and she needs medications to sleep through the night, to quiet her grumbling stomach.
It’s dangerous to get diet information from social media that doesn’t come with context and a nuanced discussion. It’s dangerous to blindly follow what someone else is doing or desire what someone else has on the internet.
This Mindset + Metabolism newsletter exists to provide that context.
My Background
I’ve worked with 1,000+ people at this point. I have my own personal experiences with weight loss/gain, and KNOW it’s not easy.
I want to share more information than what social media offers regarding parenting, postpartum, perimenopause, and weight loss. My goal isn’t to create viral statements and dance to trending audio, it’s to offer tools to help you succeed on your journey.
Sustainable health is so much more than a few seconds of click-bait content from an influencer. I want to walk with you in the in-between, on how parenting, postpartum, perimenopause, and weight loss are woven together in healthy habits that help you succeed on your own unique journey.
Thriving in the In-Between
Mindset + Metabolism is about finding that unsexy grey area, it’s about understanding the nuance with ALL things that are important to you, and then choosing what you want to do with that information. We discuss the “in-between.”
The “in-between” signifies the under-discussed season between your reproductive years and menopause. Women are navigating huge life transitions, wild hormonal fluctuations, and body changes during this time that often get swept under the rug as “normal” or things to just deal with.
Looking for helpful discussions on what you can do to eat, live, and thrive in your 30s and 40s? I’ve got you.
We can agree to disagree
Nutrition and weight loss are sensitive topics. There will be things you disagree with and things that make you feel a little uncomfortable. All I ask for is an open-mind. An ability to discern when you’re feeling triggered because you realize there’s a bit of truth/tough love and when you may benefit from skipping the conversation. All is well and good. Leave what you don’t like, take what you do.
My Approach
I truly believe in order to have a healthy relationship with food and to meet your weight loss goals you must tackle your mindset.
I’ll be sharing mindset tools from cognitive science research along with the science of weight loss. Let’s make weight loss feel approachable and last beyond a 30-day plan.
Want to learn more about how I approach nutrition and weight loss with my patients, and what you’ll receive here? Check out my podcast episode with another amazing RD, Michelle Shapiro. We share our holistic approach to nutrition that emphasizes agency, reduces unnecessary food restrictions, and meets an individual where they’re at.
I’m so glad you are here. Rediscovering optimal health and wellness in these in-between years should be energizing and sustainable, and I’m excited to get there with you.

Yay Steph!!! You're totally right - social media is lacking nuance (how can there be nuance in 15 second videos?) and it's one of the main things that has caused me to pull back too. So glad to see you doing this!
